With its flexible interior, advanced tech, and capability off the beaten path, the Subaru Crosstrek has carved out a unique niche in the crowded compact crossover class. Many offerings in the segment provide expandable storage areas and roomy outboard seats, but there are a few things about the Crosstrek that help it stand out. Two crossovers from Honda are often compared to the Crosstrek: the similarly sized HR-V and the slightly larger CR-V. Let's see how they match up.

Subaru Crosstrek vs. Honda HR-V

At first glance, the HR-V seems to offer a similar experience to the Crosstrek, but a closer comparison reveals its weaknesses.

  • Performance: Out of the gate, the Subaru Crosstrek pulls ahead thanks to a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. With 152 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, the Crosstrek easily out-accelerates the HR-V and its 1.8-liter engine (141 horsepower, 127 pound-feet of torque. Furthermore, the Crosstrek comes standard with symmetrical all-wheel-drive. The HR-V's regular all-wheel-drive is only available as an option.

  • Space: Passengers will enjoy a roomier ride in the Crosstrek, which offers more front headroom and legroom than the HR-V. In the back, the Crosstrek has nearly eight more inches of hip room than the CR-V. Both models offer about 55 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity.

  • Technology: The Subaru Crosstrek comes standard with a touchscreen infotainment system and smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You have to pay more for these with the HR-V.

Crosstrek models with a continuously variable automatic transmission come standard with the Subaru EyeSight package. This suite of advanced driver-assistance technologies includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist technologies. To get these on the HR-V, you have to jump up two trim levels.

  • Wild Card: With two more inches of ground clearance and standard all-wheel-drive, the Subaru Crosstrek is better suited than the HR-V when it comes to straying from the asphalt.

    Subaru Crosstrek vs. Honda CR-V

Though they're technical in different segments, the Crosstrek and CR-V often draw comparisons. The CR-V's larger size gives it more passenger and cargo space. Still, the Crosstrek offers comparable front passenger dimensions and significantly more rear hip room. The Crosstrek also compares favorably to the CR-V in the following categories:

    • Performance: The CR-V's turbocharged engine delivers more horsepower, but the Crosstrek generates 180 pound-feet of torque compared to the CR-V's 179 pound-feet of torque.

    • All-Wheel-Drive: Like all Subaru models, the Crosstrek comes standard with Subaru's signature symmetrical all-wheel-drive. The CR-V offers all-wheel-drive, but only as an option.

    • Technology: The Crosstrek comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration on all trims. To get these on the CR-V, you have to pay more. Both models come standard with driver-assistance technologies such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

  • Off-Road: The Subaru Crosstrek is more capable off the beaten path than the CR-V, thanks to its superior ground-clearance, standard all-wheel-drive, and X-Mode hill-descent control technology. The CR-V is more of an in-town crossover.

  • Miscellaneous: The Crosstrek comes standard with raised roof rails, adding extra carrying capacity for your weekend adventure. You have to go all the way to the top trim to get roof rails on the CR-V
